Competition for IT talents - Five steps for companies to gain advantage

The rapid change in development needs and technologies, a shortage of quality workforce, and the difficulty of retaining colleagues with valuable professional skills are major challenges for companies worldwide. How to give a unique answer to a global problem? Who is responsible for the management of this problem, and where should you start? We discussed all these questions with Anita Fachs, who is the managing director in charge of corporate services at Green Fox.

On the one hand, it is impossible to establish and manage an IT organisation that effectively supports business goals without a powerful team. On the other hand, it is increasingly difficult to find and retain motivated professionals with the right skills. Furthermore, as telework becoming more and more popular, the globalization of the labor market has gained new drive, which is reflected in rising wages.

Traditional recruitment methods are time-consuming and even patience is not a guarantee of success, especially when it comes to recruiting large numbers of people. This is not only the case for classic developer positions but competition increases for positions in specialised fields, combinations of different skills (e.g. finance and software development), or for positions requiring up-to-date knowledge of Salesforce and other platforms. And the employees can easily change jobs if they feel that they are not able to develop or receive the support they need to perform as expected.

1. The strategic role of trainings

Well-known companies building an attractive employer brand and helping their colleagues to succeed in their job can gain an advantage in the competition for talents because employees who are proud of their professional achievements are more committed to their company.

Some say it is only a  matter of salary. However, recent  studies show that the desire to develop professionally and meet challenges is just as motivating in career decisions as the salary. Recognising this and placing the training of your prospective or current employees in the focus of your strategy will give you a competitive advantage.

“There is a significant labour shortage in the IT market, so attracting and retaining talents is crucial. Training plays an increasingly important role here. In special cases, launching your own bootcamp is the only way to go, for example, when you need software developers with strong basic business knowledge to automate business processes. This skillset is very rare, so it's worth investing in training your own professionals”
